Sample 1
Sample Answer
Both maps display an island, before and after it was developed for tourism.
The island is approximately 250 metres long, has palm trees dotted around it, is surrounded by ocean and has a beach to the west. Over the period, the island was completely transformed with the addition of a hotel and a pier; however, the eastern part of the island appears to have been left undeveloped.
The most noticeable additions are the hotel rooms. 6 buildings, surrounding some trees, have been built in the west of the island and 9 buildings have been constructed in the centre of the island. Between the two accommodation areas, a reception building and a restaurant have been developed.
A pier has also been built on the south coast of the island, allowing yachts access to the resort. Apart from the trees, the beach remains the only natural feature to remain relatively untouched; however, it does appear that it is now used for swimming.

The diagrams below show the coastal village of Seaville in 1980 and 2010. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Sample Answer
The maps illustrate significant changes in the seaside town of Seaville, over a thirty-year period, from 1980 to 2010.
Overall, the village developed substantially from a holiday settlement to a permanent town over the 30 year period. Similarly, infrastructure and amenities increased, along with the town’s capacity to provide for tourists.
In 1980, Seaville was tiny, attracting only a few tourists, who were accommodated in cottages or a small hotel. In contrast, East Bank was unspoilt. To the east of the cottages, was a marsh, and there was woodland to the north. Regarding recreation, besides the beach, the town only offered a tea room.
However, the village had grown dramatically by 2010. Retirement villages had been built to the west of the main road. The marsh had been drained and the cottages demolished in order to construct houses. To cater for tourists, both a new high-rise hotel and holiday cottages on East Bank had been constructed. The woodlands had been cleared and supplanted by a golf course. Similarly, a boat club had been built on the west bank of the river. New infrastructure was created to access East Bank. On the other hand, the town had preserved the original hotel.
Sample 3
Two maps show the change of a coastal town called Pentland, from 1950 to 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words
Sample Answer
The given map displays the changes of the past 57years in Coastal Town which is also known as the Pentland. By comparing the 1950 and 2007 maps of Pentland certain developments are noteworthy. It can be observed that a lot of people moved to Coastal Town by 2007 as the infrastructure and facilities became accessible for them in Pentland. Overall the main structure of the town with one main road with two bisecting roads remained similar. Whereas, the industrial area of 1950 located in the northwest region of the map was replaced with a park, swimming pool, multi-storey car parking and some shops in 2007. The car park on the east side of the road was removed and towards the right side of the eastern road, many new apartments and shops were constructed. Towards the southeast side of the Pentland was mainly the grassland in 1950, but with time many houses were built in that corner. Rest of the grassland area of the southwest corner of Pentland was converted into a cinema. Also the sea was developed into Yacht Marina covered by a half-circled road. |
Sample 4
The maps show changes in the local industrial village in England called Stamdorf between 1985 and 2015.
You should spend 20 minutes on this task.
Write more than 150 words.
Sample Answer
These maps distinctively show us the difference in the local industrial village of Stamdorf in three decades. Overall, a huge transformation has taken place in the village. There were new buildings built in the village by 2015. There weren’t many buildings in 1985 except for small roadside inns and a factory whereas in 2015, there were a large number of buildings like the housing estate 1 and 2, the industrial zone and the industrial staff quarter. The roadside inns on the left side of the Thames river were shifted to the right side of the river, in the south-east corner. There was a wooden bridge built across the Thames river connecting both sides of the Arlington Road which was later replaced by a steel bridge. The field was further moved to the south-west corner. The factory built-in 1985 was demolished and an industrial zone was built in the north side of the ride in 2015. Surprisingly, despite all the demolitions and changes, the plantations have increased in 2015 from 1985. |
Sample 5
The map below shows the changes in an American town between 1948 and 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and making comparisons where relevant.
You should write at least 150 words.
Sample Answer
The given maps showcase how American towns have transformed, by showing how it appeared in two varying years – 1948 and 2010. A quick glance tells that newer buildings have developed almost everywhere, except for the southeast residential area of the town. However, the overall area has neither contracted nor expanded. To start with, it is visible that factories situated on the north-east corner were demolished to construct an airport and different commercial buildings. Similarly, the supermarket is built in the place of the lake, which was next to the factories. It should be noticed that four commercial buildings were constructed on the southwest side of the new supermarket. Back in 1948, a church was in the place of the stadium, which is visible in 2010 toward the south direction. On the other hand, a variety of features of the town didn’t change throughout the period. A canal, the natural elements and trees remain untouched. Also, even the road system did not change with 2 big and 2 small roads. Adding to it, in the north, the petrol station remained intact and so did the residential buildings toward the bottom right corner, unlike the ones on the other side of the canal. |
Sample 6
The diagram shows the changes that have taken place at West Park Secondary School since its construction in 1950.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Sample Answer
The diagram shows how the West Park Secondary School has transformed over the period of 60 years since the time of its establishment in 1950. It is visible that the school underwent some of the substantial changes throughout this period with the building’s expansion and the additions of car parking and sports field. As the diagram showcases, in 1950, the school had just one building, which was next to a few houses. Just behind the building, there was a playground. Also, towards the south-west side, there was farmland. After 30 years, the houses got demolished to construct car parking. On top of that, the building got expanded in two different parts – one is known as a science block and the other is used as the primary building. Another change that took place was the farmland conversion into a sports field. Looking at the map of 2010, the only significant change that occurred was the car park extension that took almost half of the entire school’s area. This resulted in the shrunken size of the playground and sports field to make way for an enlarged car park. |
